We chatted to 的 artist about handpoke tattoos, planting trees 和 love of tattooing ears…

When looking for a studio to work from, I found that even though I learnt in a professional environment, handpoking still had a stigma attached to it.  Now though I have 的 pleasure of working alongside awesome 和 inspiring artists (machine 和 handpoke), 和 it’在专业上更为广为人知和接受。

我之所以被吸引去手工纹身,主要是因为它’s a lot gentler than 的 machine 和 I find it very 的rapeutic. Most of my clients agree with me on this.

I have been handpoked by quite a few different artists 和 found 的y each have different techniques 和 ways of setting up. I tend to research 的 artist first, I’m quite fussy when it comes to getting tattooed. It has to be 的 right style for me, 和 I’d want 的 artist to be into my idea.

When it comes to my own tattooing process I 总是 book in plenty of time for each client so we can go over 的 design, size 和 placement together. Whether it be a flash design, a custom piece or something I’ve drawn onto 的 skin, we have to make sure it’s perfect – I don’喜欢赶时间!

I like to have 的 time to get settled 和 for my client to feel settled with me, 和 with 的 design. Most of my tattoos like 的 small leaves, words, animals, ears, 和 single flowers take between one to two hours.

I also have a nice collection of reference books that include botanics, patterns 和 floral art. Sometimes inspiration comes from a leaf on 的 floor, art exhibitions, or 的 pattern on an old lady’s skirt!

我喜欢纹身自己设计的东西– so any flowers or leaves, yes please. Animals I love too. Handwriting I could happily do everyday. Basically as long as 我可以 have a bit of freedom with 的 design 和 it’s my usual style, 的n I’我是一个非常快乐的兔子。

每个耳朵都有不同的形状和大小,因此’s fun to see what design works best. I usually freehand 的 design on 的se places but elsewhere on 的 body, if we’重新做花或叶子,它’s 总是 super enjoyable to draw straight on 的 skin , especially if it’s an area that’不平坦或不容易在其上放置模具。

Cath Pilling

We just love 的 delicate botanicals 和 nature inspired pieces that Cath起球 握手。

我知道我’ve been very lucky –学徒难求,我’m grateful to be under 的 wing of someone who is lovely as well as a great teacher.

When I was offered 的 apprenticeship I had a moment of fear creep in that I was too old, I had too many responsibilities (young kids 和 another part-time job), 和 that I, well, might be shit at it. I’我很高兴我忽略了那些感受,因为’s one of 的 best things I’ve ever done.

几年前我获得了美术学位,’我总是制作艺术品,但我没有’t 总是 想成为纹身师– It just wasn’t on my radar when I was younger. After having different careers (mostly in 的 arts) 和 starting a family, I came to tattooing sideways 和 a little later than most at 35.

什么 drew you to 的 tattoo world? 老实说,我不’t feel like it’s 的 tattoo world as such that I’被吸引到。 它’这是一个奇怪的老行业,它可能是惊人的,充满了人类和不可思议的工作,但我’m aware that 的 tattoo world has it’s problems, usually stemming from 的 人们互相尊重的方式。 我关于纹身的事 上午  really attracted to is 的 creative freedom (drawing 和 being creative as a job? Win!) 和 working with clients.

Having that one-to-one experience with a client is what I miss about being an aromatherapist, so tattooing feels like a perfect balance of creativity 和 human connection. With handpoke especially, it feels like 的re is an intimacy 的re. I feel so honoured whenever anyone wants me to permanently mark 的ir skin.

All but one of my tattoos are handpoked. The first one I had was totally spontaneous. I went to London for 的 day to visit The Other 艺术 Fair.

我目前所有的纹身都是基于自然和植物的’d just like to be covered in nature! I have eight in total at 的 moment, so I have a lot of space 和 I’努力获取更多。一世’我有一个艺术家名单,我’d love to visit over 的 next few years. I don’t really have a favourite tattoo, I love 的m all for different reasons, some for 的 aesthetics, some for what 的y represent.

为什么要上诉 to you? 一世’我不是机器噪音的忠实粉丝– it’说话有点困难,而且’s more invasive for the skin.

Can you tell us about 的 process behind your tattoos, what inspires you, how would you describe your style? Without 的 need for a machine, 的 actual tattoo process only needs a minimal set-up. Each tattoo is created by gently poking 墨水 under 的 surface of 的 skin.

什么 do you like to draw/tattoo 和 what would you like to do more of?

什么’s been 的 best part of your apprenticeship so far 和 what have you found the hardest? I’在我脑海中已经讨论了很多这个问题,但是我可以’t pin down what 的 best part is. The most valuable part of it is learning so much – Some of those things are key pieces of knowledge 和 information in regard to 的 process (especially hygiene 和 safety), 和 some are great tips that I wouldn’t otherwise know.

The hardest thing? Pacing myself when it comes to progress. One one hand, I want to learn it all yesterday, whiz through my apprenticeship 和 be working in 的 studio 全职。 我经常要提醒自己,我’m doing my apprenticeship part-time between my other job 和 being a parent, so of course my progress is going to be slower than if I could be at 的 studio full-time. It’有时令人沮丧,但这仅仅是因为’s what I want to do.

I 上午 a self taught 手戳 tattooer, before this I was body piecer for around four years, 的re I completed a more traditional style apprenticeship.

什么 drew you to 的 tattoo world? I approached a local shop about a piercing apprenticeship 和 from 的n on my life was changed.

IMG_8339

Has your style of tattooing changed? 什么 do you love to tattoo?

When I started tattooing I did a lot more of I work real hard everyday to be inspired by what I love 和 create bold 和 solid pieces that will stand 的 test of time.

IMG_8336

Can you tell us about your set up 和 的 process behind your tattoos?

I 上午 very much into 的 technical aspect of tattooing. I 上午 all about learning 和 creating a solid well lined, bold, clean 和 nicely shaded tattoo. Tattooing by hand is typically a really calming 和 relaxing process, I gently push 的 墨水 into 的 skin by hand using 的 needle. There is a lot less trauma to 的 skin, which typically means 的 tattoo heals faster and for a lot of people this can be an easier process to sit for.

IMG_8347

什么 inspires you? Are 的re any artists that influence your work? 无论’s current events, or things happening in 的 city that I live in. 但是你知道吗,我有太多的艺术家启发和影响着我,而我仰望的是,我不会’t be able to list 的m all. In both shops I work in, 的re are incredible people 和 talented artists, which inspire me daily.

我不’t regret what I got though, but when I do get tattooed now I really like to get tattooed by people I really look up to 和 really love what 的y are about. So normally I chose from 的ir flash, or get a piece 的y really like, as that way I feel I get a tattoo that really represents that artist.

I normally guest in another shop every month, whether it be 的 UK or abroad, this is one of my absolute favourite things to do in tattooing. 旅行ing 和 meeting phenomenal artists drives me to be a technically better tattooer.  Currently for 的 rest of this year I do not have any conventions planned, but my next coming guest spots are at 八月下旬在曼彻斯特举行的全民集体行动 Seny Tatttoo于9月下旬在巴塞罗那举行。 I 上午 currently taking bookings for both of 的se via Instagram的 or email.

I really like tattooing naked ladies 和 kind of cultish things. But people know me for my delicate wrist work 和 stuff. Stick 和 poke is really organic feeling. You can tell that somebody has made it with 的ir hand, it has a really personal feel to it. Once it’s on your skin it feels like it’s been 的re forever. So, my style is 手戳d.

Dude, I worked every job under 的 sun forever. I’ve painted houses. I’ve been a housekeeper. I’ve been a bartender. I’ve been like all that stuff. I was managing a vintage clothing store 和 I had a breakdown at lunch one day 和 was like ‘I can’t fucking do this anymore. I’m just going to go crazy. I have to do something else.’

When I quit, I saw that 的re was like a niche for tattooing small tattoos at a cheaper price. Mostly for girls who were too intimidated to go into a tattoo shop 和 ask for a tiny tattoo 和 pay a lot of money. I was like ‘I can do that.’

I started my apprenticeship at 的 end of 2009, so around seven years now.

How did you start? 什么 did you do before? 我不能 ’t really leave it alone after that! I had one tattoo apprenticeship that fell through after a month so I 的n opened a fair-trade gift shop selling clothes I had revamped, jewellery I had made from vintage 和 broken pieces 和 much more. I shut it down after nearly two years to start a new apprenticeship at Tradition 180 Custom Tattoo studio.

I have 总是 drawn! It was crazy as in my second primary school I was actually taken out of art lessons to do more spelling as I 上午 really dyslexic. I did 3D Design for Sustainability Ba Hons, it was pretty strict 和 so it kept me focused 和 well one of my life ethos is to live by 的 three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Hence I guess why I 上午 trying to make Embody Tattoo studio one of 的 first inclusive 和 sustainable tattoo studios in 的 UK. I want to minimalise our negative impact on 的 planet.

什么 drew you to 的 tattoo world?

I try not to draw tattoo art 和 instead draw whats in my 心! I love realism but I try to make it more abstract. I love lines 和 I was told off a lot in art lessons for putting lines where 的re were none, I also love realistic forms 和 colour.

什么 do you like to tattoo 和 draw? At 的 moment I 上午 trying to push handpoking as far as 我可以 take it, so I’米色混合和平滑的灰色阴影。

什么 inspires you? I’m interested in ancient cultures 和 的ir forms of art 和 symbolism, I get a lot of inspiration from 的re. Also 的 beauty of nature 和 our surroundings. I guess that why I also love 的 艺术 Nouveau 和 艺术 Deco movements. I often bump into things whilst looking up at either 的 flourishes on 的 tops of buildings or just 的 forms of 的 trees 和 skies.

什么 would you love to tattoo? And what would you refuse to do?

一世 also have a few more guest spots to confirm with other studios such as 电动女士纹身 工作室(阅读)和 乌鸦和鹅毛笔纹身 工作室(南安普敦),所以我’ll be up 和 around 的 country.
The next convention I 上午 100% working is 的 果阿纹身节 你肯定会在明年曼彻斯特见我’s 纹身茶会 和唐卡斯特’s 纹身果酱。一世’我仍在等待确认更多,但是你’ll be certain to see me down in 的 south of England, across in Wales 和 up in Scotland.
