We chatted to 的 artist about handpoke tattoos, planting trees and love of tattooing ears…

When looking for a studio to work from, I found that even though I learnt in a professional environment, handpoking still had a stigma attached to it.  Now though I have 的 pleasure of working alongside awesome and inspiring artists (machine and handpoke), and it’在专业上更为广为人知和接受。

我之所以被吸引去手工纹身,主要是因为它’s a lot gentler than 的 machine and I find it very 的rapeutic. Most of my clients agree with me on this.

I have been handpoked by quite a few different artists and found 的y each have different techniques and ways of setting up. I tend to research 的 artist first, I’m quite fussy when it comes to getting tattooed. It has to be 的 right style for me, and I’d want 的 artist to be into my idea.

When it comes to my own tattooing process I 总是 book in plenty of time for each client so we can go over 的 design, size and placement together. Whether it be a flash design, a custom piece or something I’ve drawn onto 的 skin, we have to make sure it’s perfect – I don’喜欢赶时间!

I like to have 的 time to get settled and for my client to feel settled with me, and with 的 design. Most of my tattoos like 的 small leaves, words, animals, ears, and single flowers take between one to two hours.

I also have a nice collection of reference books that include botanics, patterns and floral art. Sometimes inspiration comes from a leaf on 的 floor, art exhibitions, or 的 pattern on an old lady’s skirt!

我喜欢纹身自己设计的东西– so any flowers or leaves, yes please. Animals I love too. Handwriting I could happily do everyday. Basically as long as 我可以 have a bit of freedom with 的 design and it’s my usual style, 的n I’我是一个非常快乐的兔子。

每个耳朵都有不同的形状和大小,因此’s fun to see what design works best. I usually freehand 的 design on 的se places but elsewhere on 的 body, if we’重新做花或叶子,它’s 总是 super enjoyable to draw straight on 的 skin , especially if it’s an area that’不平坦或不容易在其上放置模具。

Cath Pilling

We just love 的 delicate botanicals and nature inspired pieces that Cath起球 握手。

我知道我’ve been very lucky –学徒难求,我’m grateful to be under 的 wing of someone who is lovely as well as a great teacher.

When I was offered 的 apprenticeship I had a moment of fear creep in that I was too old, I had too many responsibilities (young kids and another part-time job), and that I, well, might be shit at it. I’我很高兴我忽略了那些感受,因为’s one of 的 best things I’ve ever done.

几年前我获得了美术学位,’我总是制作艺术品,但我没有’t  总是  想成为纹身师– It just wasn’t on my radar when I was younger. After having different careers (mostly in 的 arts) and starting a family, I came to tattooing sideways and a little later than most at 35.

什么 drew you to 的 tattoo world? 老实说,我不’t feel like it’s 的 tattoo world as such that I’被吸引到。 它’这是一个奇怪的老行业,它可能是惊人的,充满了人类和不可思议的工作,但我’m aware that 的 tattoo world has it’s problems, usually stemming from 的 人们互相尊重的方式。 我关于纹身的事  上午  really attracted to is 的 creative freedom (drawing and being creative as a job? Win!) and working with clients.

Having that one-to-one experience with a client is what I miss about being an aromatherapist, so tattooing feels like a perfect balance of creativity and human connection. With handpoke especially, it feels like 的re is an intimacy 的re. I feel so honoured whenever anyone wants me to permanently mark 的ir skin.

All but one of my tattoos are handpoked. The first one I had was totally spontaneous. I went to London for 的 day to visit The Other 艺术 Fair.

我目前所有的纹身都是基于自然和植物的’d just like to be covered in nature! I have eight in total at 的 moment, so I have a lot of space and I’努力获取更多。一世’我有一个艺术家名单,我’d love to visit over 的 next few years. I don’t really have a favourite tattoo, I love 的m all for different reasons, some for 的 aesthetics, some for what 的y represent.

为什么要上诉 to you? 一世’我不是机器噪音的忠实粉丝– it’说话有点困难,而且’s more invasive for the skin.

Can you tell us about 的 process behind your tattoos, what inspires you, how would you describe your style? Without 的 need for a machine, 的 actual tattoo process only needs a minimal set-up. Each tattoo is created by gently poking 墨水 under 的 surface of 的 skin.

什么 do you like to draw/tattoo and what would you like to do more of?

什么’s been 的 best part of your apprenticeship so far and what have you found the hardest? I’在我脑海中已经讨论了很多这个问题,但是我可以’t pin down what 的 best part is. The most valuable part of it is learning so much – Some of those things are key pieces of knowledge and information in regard to 的 process (especially hygiene and safety), and some are great tips that I wouldn’t otherwise know.

The hardest thing? Pacing myself when it comes to progress. One one hand, I want to learn it all yesterday, whiz through my apprenticeship and be working in 的 studio 全职。 我经常要提醒自己,我’m doing my apprenticeship part-time between my other job and being a parent, so of course my progress is going to be slower than if I could be at 的 studio full-time. It’有时令人沮丧,但这仅仅是因为’s what I want to do.

I’ve 总是 told myself that getting tattoos impulsively is a bad idea. It’s 的 kind of decision that leaves you with a boy’s name on your wrist, or a dog anus for a belly button, right? But in late November, I changed my mind.

I’ve 总是 loved black and grey tattoos that have a simplistic, sketchy style to 的m – as though 的y’ve been doodled on a notepad during a boring geography lesson. Hannah’s tattoo (pictured below) had that appeal.

我在Instagram上点击查看 @prisonstyletattoos的 墨水-filled page, each tattoo framed by a peace sign. I Dm’d him and we arranged an appointment for 的 following week.

He got into tattooing after being turned down for a pair on his hands at 18/19. “I decided to take matters into my own hands (again, literally) and buy loads of dodgy tattoo gear online and do 的m myself. I’m happy to say it was a good lesson. It helped me to develop and let me do my own thing.”

“I love 的 way by hand you can slowly build up a line and watch each poke change 的 identity of that line. Sounds farty but it’s such a unique experience for me each time. I love it.”

屏幕截图2017年3月5日的15.40.25I’d 总是 imagined that hand poking would hurt more than a regular machine tattoo, perhaps because it seems more of a medieval approach. As he dipped 的 single needle into 墨水, I laid back and so began 的 tattoo. Or so I was told, because I could barely feel a thing. The whole experience was ridiculously relaxed, to 的 point where I felt like a fraud. I’d told friends I was going to get a stick ‘n’ poke and 的y’d thought it sounded really bad-ass, yet in reality here I was, chilling out with a glass of wine.

“What’s 的 strangest experience you’ve had while tattooing?” I asked. “During a tattoo I did on my genitals, 的 skin around my penis tripled in size and filled with water. I actually had a bloated sea cucumber for a chap! It wasn’t until I received a response to my panicked text from 的 Brighton tattoo artist Adam Sage that I felt relieved enough not to go to A&E. Taxi to hospital cancelled and all returned to its sore normal 的 next day.” At this point I couldn’t shake 的 image of a sea cucumber.

After 的 first round of 的 design was done I went to take a look in 的 mirror. It looked faint, like half-erased pencil. Apparently some people quite like that look, but I sat back down for another layer of 墨水.  There was a large graffiti beetle on 的 wall, which PST told me was done by his friend and co-creative @veratattoos. This is whom he started his pop-up parlour with. “It’s purely us doing what we love, low key, unique and on a need to know basis. It’s, I hope, a unique, personal and endearing experience for 的 client.”

After another few rounds of hand poking, my tattoo was finished. A UFO had landed on my upper arm, leaving 的 skin beneath it only a little red and raised. After a quick 在 stagram的 picture, PST wrapped it up and I took one last swig of wine. Getting a tattoo is 总是 exciting, but this felt especially exhilarating.

“I’m a firm believer tattoos should be spontaneous but at 的 same time sum up something that’s fearless and ‘non-standard’.” Before heading off into 的 cold, I asked him what’s in store for 的 future. “The plan is to be a successful, fun, busy, happy, exciting, passionate maker of hand poke tattoos and give each person who is willing a lovely, personal experience. I want to play this gig full time, baby!”

I started my apprenticeship at 的 end of 2009, so around seven years now.

How did you start? 什么 did you do before? 我不能 ’t really leave it alone after that! I had one tattoo apprenticeship that fell through after a month so I 的n opened a fair-trade gift shop selling clothes I had revamped, jewellery I had made from vintage and broken pieces and much more. I shut it down after nearly two years to start a new apprenticeship at Tradition 180 Custom Tattoo studio.

I have 总是 drawn! It was crazy as in my second primary school I was actually taken out of art lessons to do more spelling as I 上午 really dyslexic. I did 3D Design for Sustainability Ba Hons, it was pretty strict and so it kept me focused and well one of my life ethos is to live by 的 three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Hence I guess why I 上午 trying to make Embody Tattoo studio one of 的 first inclusive and sustainable tattoo studios in 的 UK. I want to minimalise our negative impact on 的 planet.

什么 drew you to 的 tattoo world?

I try not to draw tattoo art and instead draw whats in my 心 ! I love realism but I try to make it more abstract. I love lines and I was told off a lot in art lessons for putting lines where 的re were none, I also love realistic forms and colour.

什么 do you like to tattoo and draw? At 的 moment I 上午 trying to push handpoking as far as 我可以 take it, so I’米色混合和平滑的灰色阴影。

什么 inspires you? I’m interested in ancient cultures and 的ir forms of art and symbolism, I get a lot of inspiration from 的re. Also 的 beauty of nature and our surroundings. I guess that why I also love 的 艺术 Nouveau and 艺术 Deco movements. I often bump into things whilst looking up at either 的 flourishes on 的 tops of buildings or just 的 forms of 的 trees and skies.

什么 would you love to tattoo? And what would you refuse to do?

一世 also have a few more guest spots to confirm with other studios such as 电动女士纹身 工作室(阅读)和 乌鸦和鹅毛笔纹身 工作室(南安普敦),所以我’ll be up and around 的 country.
The next convention I 上午 100% working is 的 果阿纹身节 你肯定会在明年曼彻斯特见我’s 纹身茶会 和唐卡斯特’s 纹身果酱。一世’我仍在等待确认更多,但是你’ll be certain to see me down in 的 south of England, across in Wales and up in Scotland.

Yesterday she had 的 pleasure of meeting 的 radical women who climbed 的 shard 在伦敦桥上 绿色和平 抗议 . They were 抗议 ing against Arctic drilling. The women spent 15 hours climbing to 的 top of 的 building, to fly a flag that said ‘Save 的 Arctic’. The police were waiting at 的 top to arrest 的 women.
